Mother's Day

"Clafouti," she says.
Not cake, dimpled with cherries.
Not bread, sweetly dusted.
"Clafouti."
Which sounds
As artificial,
As contrived
As this--
Sitting here, across the table
From a woman who can't see
The cake in clafouti
Or the person in me.
