OK. What is your favorite thing about fall? Otherwise known as autumn? Otherwise known as those brief weeks between late summer and early winter?

Our side gate |
It is just about fall here right now. That is my hands-down ABSOLUTE favorite time of the year. I love the leaves turning colors, the weather getting cooler, the jeans and sweaters, the football games (!!), the pumpkin carving, the costume-buying, the smell in the air, the firewood stacking by the fireplace, the nutmeg/cinnamon/mace/cloves everywhere, the apples, the brisk walks, the cozy blankets.

I am in love with this tree. |
Everything. We have a flame maple outside that is positively burning up, one branch at a time, and every time I duck under it a part of my heart finds peace.

The broom is not going to sweep the courtyard itself... |
So. Your favorites of fall. Go.
Gorgeous pictures! Especially that first one. I love those veiny leaves.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of fall is the part where the summer people go away.
Man, we are having our first cool night TONIGHT. I hope. As in, it was cool a few weeks ago, but then it snapped back to the 80s, and tonight is the first night since then that I've not regretted not having shorts. Hopefully it sticks this time.
ReplyDeleteAlso, our trees remain stubbornly green. Blasted things.
I like to take the summer people's money until the winter people come around.
ReplyDeleteAnd the trees turning is like THE FIREWORKS OF NATURE! New England is way more beautiful than here-- we have one of the oldest maples in our county, and it is about 30 years old. Sadness. Most of our trees are evergreen, cottonwood, aspen, and birch.
We get a lot of poplar. The sugar maples are pretty vibrant where you can find them, but most of the trees here are poplar and beech, which turn bright yellow, or oak which turn sort of a somber red-brown. I think my favorite fall color is the Sweet Gum, they go deep deep deep red, almost like wine.

Fall is the fucking BEST.
ReplyDeleteI love having all the windows open while something delicious is cooking in the crock-pot and I'm curled up reading and ignoring football.
OH! And the jogging trail around the little lake that I love turns spectacular.
Also I'm in love with your side gate.
I love the smell of fall... I can't explain what it smells like but the air always seems so crisp and wonderful smelling.
ReplyDeleteI love the smell too. I love everything about fall: the leaves, the coolness, the mist ( it always seems to get misty in autumn), but the smell most of all.
ReplyDeleteBlue, I'm with you on the sweet gum leaves - those are my favorite. I also love the bushes that have pointed oval-ish leaves that turn a similar color.
ReplyDeleteI love everything about fall - the colors, the smell of the air, the swishy sound of walking through leaves, and fall jackets. The street I live on now has more variations in color than anywhere I've seen in Chicago, so it's like my own little mini-glimpse of my sorely missed East Coast fall foliage. And this year, the trees have actually been turning for a whole MONTH, instead of the usual "fall color for 2 weeks, then dead" schedule!
